The Italian financial newspaper Il Sole 24 Ore has dedicated an article to the recognition process of the Protected Geographical Indication (PGI) for Coral and Cameo from Torre del Greco — a project promoted by Assocoral and now led by the Consorzio Corallo e Cammeo Torrese, with the full support of the Campania Goldsmith District (D.OR).
The article highlights how this initiative represents a key milestone in the protection and promotion of two artistic excellences that define Torre del Greco’s identity worldwide, combining tradition, craftsmanship, and innovation.
The project stems from the new European regulation that extends the possibility of obtaining PGI status to artisanal and industrial products, beyond the agri-food sector.
The Consorzio Corallo e Cammeo Torrese, established precisely to meet these new European directives, has already achieved national recognition, based on two distinct specifications: one for worked coral and one for engraved cameo.
“The recognition of the Protected Geographical Indication for coral and cameo is a project we firmly believe in,” said Vincenzo Giannotti, President of the Campania Goldsmith District and of Il Tarì. “These are creations deeply rooted in our territory, made with extraordinary mastery — a heritage to be protected and promoted.”
The next milestone is set for December 1st, 2025, when the European Commission will open the official platform for submitting PGI recognition requests. In the meantime, Italy is finalizing the transposition of the European directives and the related documentation.
The article also notes that the Torre del Greco initiative is among the first of its kind in Italy: only six artisanal consortia have started similar processes, making this project a national best practice for the protection of high-quality artisanal production.
